Canine Care

Prices are current as of May 1, 2025.  Prices are subject to review and Horse Sense Vet reserves the right to adjust prices without notice.  Medication and consumable prices are changing more rapidly than ever and we have to adjust as that changes.  We do our best to make our services affordable, but some costs are beyond our control and we hope you understand.

Wellness Exam

Wellness exams are recommended annually to assess your pet and monitor for gradual changes to condition such as age related changes on an otherwise healthy pet.  Early diagnosis of health concerns before the pet even shows outward symptoms greatly aids in treatment and longevity of your pet.  These can be combined with vaccines or annual blood work for long term medications.

$65.00

Sick Exams

Sick exams are focused on a particular concern brought by the owner, other problems may be addressed if noted.  These appointments may include diagnostics such as Ultrasound, blood work or x-rays at an additional charge to diagnose the issue and medications may also be prescribed at this time.  Vaccines are not commonly given during sick appointments

$65.00

Behavioral Consults

Consults on behavioral issues are available, but requires the Behavioral Questionnaire be completed and returned ahead of the appointment time. We can address issues such as anxiety, fear aggression, sound sensitivity, among many others.  We can assist with medication if warranted as well as discussed training and behavior modification protocols

$130.00

Second Opinion Consults

We believe that a second set of eyes and thoughts can be useful with many cases and we are open to taking a look at a case that is not responding with the expected treatment.  It doesn’t mean that the other vet made any errors, sometimes a different perspective is needed.  These appointments are typically longer and the records are required  ahead of time to avoid repeating tests that have already been performed.

Reproduction

In House progesterone Testing with Mini Vidas

Timing for breeding is critical if you are using shipped or frozen semen, for breeding dogs that require c-sections to whelp puppies.  Our machine is in-house and gives reputable numbers comparable to the IDEXX gold standard in about an hour.

**Progesterone testing needs to be performed before 4 PM to allow time to process the sample before closing

$75.00

CHV Testing

Testing for Canine Herpes virus prior to breeding can be recommended for bitches that have lost litters unexpectedly or are at a high risk for being exposed to the virus.  This test is performed by WSU and can take up to 6 weeks to be returned, please plan accordingly to make sure you have results before breeding.

$100.00 + shipping cost

Brucella Testing

Testing for Brucella is recommended in any breeding dog before breeding, both male and female.  This transmissible disease is on the rise in the US and can be transmitted by other means than breeding. It can be difficult to cure this disease and it can be a cause of infertility in dogs.  This disease also has the chance of being passed to humans, making testing even more important.

$130.00

Vaginal Culture

Recommended for certain breeds such as mastiffs and other heavy breeds as well as dogs that have had trouble conceiving.  This needs to be done early in the heat cycle to allow time to start the bitch on any treatment she may need before breeding.  This can take 3-7 days to come back from the lab, so plan ahead.  A consult with Dr. Brendel can determine if this is a needed step in your plan.

$95.00

Pregnancy Ultrasound

25-30 days post breeding we can evaluate for pregnancy and count the number of puppies we are expecting.  At this stage the number can still change if the bitch resorbs the pups or has trouble carrying a litter due to hormone imbalances. This is always an exciting day for all of us and we love to see the expectant moms and their families for ultrasounds.

$60.00

Semen Collection

Semen collection is available for both cooled semen to be shipped as well as for use In-house for AI/SI/or TCI.  Bringing a teaser in season is always recommended, especially for novice males.  We will not attempt to collect highly anxious animals.

$60.00

Semen Evaluation

Semen evaluation is offered using an iSperm to get results in seconds. It can be used to check semen quality before breeding, assess how well a dog’s semen can ship and picking the right extender, or evaluating after receiving cooled or frozen semen before breeding

$60.00

Artificial Insemination

AI is the least technical form of assisted breeding.  It involves using a pipette to deposit semen in the cranial vagina.  It can be used for fresh or cooled semen, but is not recommended for Frozen semen. Progesterone timing is required for this procedure and we require either the use of our in house Mini Vidas Testing or testing through IDEXX lab testing.  Semen collection and/or evaluation is an additional cost.

$100.00

Trans-cervical insemination

TCI Uses a semi-rigid endoscope to allow visualization of the cervix, pass a catheter directly into the uterine body and deposit the semen closer to the actual eggs.  This can be useful when the semen is poor quality or there is a small amount. This can be used with fresh, cooled or frozen semen. Progesterone timing is required for this procedure and we require either the use of our in house Mini Vidas Testing or testing through IDEXX lab testing.  Semen collection and/or evaluation is an additional cost.

$285.00

Surgical Implant

Surgical implant requires parenteral anesthesia and a small incision on the abdomen to allow insemination into the uterine horns using a small catheter penetrating each horn.  This is also useful for small collections and poor quality semen and frozen semen as it can allow breeding at a time when the cervix may have closed. This can be used with fresh, cooled or frozen semen. Progesterone timing is required for this procedure and we require either the use of our in house Mini Vidas Testing or testing through IDEXX lab testing.  Semen collection and/or evaluation is an additional cost.

We are able to use any of the methods to assist you in breeding your dog, but which one may be the right choice can vary with every dog, every pregnancy and every semen sample.  Breeding is definitely not a one size fits all situation and we are here to help navigate those options.

$600.00

Vaccinations

A Wellness exam is required before we can administer vaccines, this is required annually so any further boosters within that year will not require another exam, unless there are further concerns.  We use the AAHA recommendations in regards to frequency and timing of vaccines.

DAPP

This is the basic “puppy shot” that covers two of the main contagious and potentially fatal diseases.  Distemper and parvo can be transmitted by infected feces and urine, so you may not know your dog has come in contact with it until symptoms begin. This vaccine is given every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks of age, a booster a yearly later and then every 3 years after that as long as the vaccines remain current. Prevention is far less expensive than treatment, please keep your puppies safe.

$30.00

Lepto

Leptospirosis is transmitted to dogs through contact with water, soil, or food contaminated by the urine of infected animals. Dogs are most at risk when they swim, drink, or play in contaminated water sources, like ponds, lakes, or puddles. Leptospirosis is especially dangerous because it can lead to severe liver and kidney damage if not treated promptly. Leptospirosis is also a disease that can be transmitted to humans. Because this is a bacterial vaccine it is given annually.

$30.00

Rabies

Rabies is transmitted through saliva from infected animals.  In our local area bats are the most likely transmitters.  This disease can be transmitted to humans through bites or saliva and in both dogs and humans, there is no effective cure once symptoms begin.  This vaccine is legislated by law and the first vaccine is valid for a year and each subsequent one is valid for 3 years if they do not lapse. We require your pets to be to date on rabies to be seen and treated unless they have a health condition that precludes vaccines.  Those cases are managed on a case by case basis with our doctor.

$30.00

Bordetella

Bordetella, commonly known as kennel cough, vaccination is important for protecting your dog from a highly contagious respiratory infection. Bordetella can spread easily in places where dogs are in close contact, like kennels, dog parks, and grooming facilities. The vaccine helps reduce the risk of your dog contracting the disease and can lessen the severity of symptoms if they do get infected. By vaccinating, you’re helping to prevent coughing, sneezing, and other respiratory issues, keeping your dog healthy and reducing the chance of spreading the infection to others. This is an annual vaccine.

$30.00

Rattlesnake

Vaccinating dogs against rattlesnake bites offers valuable protection in areas where rattlesnakes are common. The vaccine helps reduce the severity of a rattlesnake bite by stimulating the dog’s immune system to fight off the venom. While it doesn’t replace the need for immediate veterinary care, it can buy critical time and lessen the impact of venom on the dog’s body. This can be especially beneficial for dogs who frequently spend time outdoors or in environments where encounters with rattlesnakes are more likely, helping to improve their chances of recovery and overall safety.

$33.50

Titer Testing

  • Rabies Titer Testing (FAVN – KSU) – $180.00 + shipping costs
    • This test can be performed for a variety of reasons.  It is required for international travel to a number of countries. It can be used to validate a dogs titer level to know if it needs to be boostered. For those wanting to mitigate the number of vaccines this can be good information, however Rabies is one vaccine that is legislated by State and often a titer will not be considered acceptable as proof of vaccination
  • Distemper/Parvo Titer Testing – $170.00
    • This test can also be used for a variety of reasons.  To confirm sero-conversion of puppies and know they are protected. To check the titer of a bitch before she is bred to know that she will have antibodies to pass to her puppies.  To evaluate their status for people that wish to reduce the number of vaccines given to the dog while still making sure they are protected.

Both these tests require blood samples and can take some time to be processed and returned.  If you are planning travel to a country that requires them please make sure they are completed on time to not cause any delays.

OFA Health Testing

Health testing is a critical component of breeding allowing us to evaluate the health of the breeding dogs with the goal of producing the best puppies possible. Below are the testing that we are able to offer on an appointment basis.  Please use the guides at http://ofa.org to check what tests are recommended for your breed

Dental Exam

Dentition is often part of a breed standard and most require the dog to have all 42 teeth present.  We will verify that the teeth are all present and accounted for, or if any are missing we will note which ones.

$10.00

Patella Exam

Testing for luxating patellas in dogs is important for detecting a condition where the kneecap slips out of place, potentially causing pain and long-term joint damage. This is particularly valuable for small breeds, which are more prone to luxating patellas. Testing provides information on whether that dog should be considered for breeding.

$15.00

Basic Cardiac Exam

Basic Cardiac test is a screening exam for dogs to evaluate heart health, specifically to detect congenital or inherited heart conditions. During the test, a veterinarian listens to the dog’s heart for any abnormal sounds, such as murmurs or irregular rhythms, which could indicate heart disease. Abnormal results may indicate a need for further testing such as Echocardiogram

$35.00

MSU OFA Thyroid Testing

Full thyroid panel testing for breeding dogs offers several benefits, including identifying thyroid imbalances that may affect fertility, health, and overall well-being. By assessing the thyroid’s function, breeders can detect hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism early, ensuring that dogs are in optimal health before breeding. This helps prevent passing on hereditary thyroid issues, improving the chances of healthy puppies and reducing the risk of complications in both the dam and sire.

$170.00

Hip and Elbow Radiographs

Evaluating breeding dogs for hip dysplasia is essential to reduce the risk of passing this hereditary condition to offspring. Hip dysplasia can lead to pain, mobility issues, and costly medical interventions, including surgery. By screening dogs through methods like radiographs and orthopedic evaluations, breeders can make informed decisions, selecting only those with healthy hips for breeding. This proactive approach helps improve the overall health and longevity of future generations, promoting better quality of life for the dogs and their owners.

$250.00* +/-sedation

Spinal Radiographs

Performing spinal radiographs on breeding dogs, especially French Bulldogs, is crucial for identifying congenital and developmental spinal abnormalities such as hemivertebrae, vertebral malformations, and intervertebral disc disease. These conditions can lead to pain, mobility issues, and neurological deficits. Since French Bulldogs are prone to spinal disorders, screening potential breeding dogs helps reduce the risk of passing on severe abnormalities, promoting healthier litters and improving overall breed welfare.

Tracheal Radiographs

Performing tracheal radiographs on breeding dogs is important for identifying structural abnormalities such as tracheal hypoplasia, which is common in brachycephalic breeds like Bulldogs. A narrow or underdeveloped trachea can lead to breathing difficulties, exercise intolerance, and an increased risk of respiratory distress. Screening breeding dogs helps prevent passing these issues to offspring, promoting healthier airways and overall well-being in future generations.

BAER Testing

Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) testing is a diagnostic tool used to assess hearing in dogs, particularly in breeds prone to congenital deafness. This test measures the brain’s response to sound stimuli, determining whether a dog has normal hearing, partial hearing loss, or complete deafness in one or both ears. BAER testing is especially important for breeding programs to help reduce the incidence of hereditary deafness and ensure puppies have the best chance of leading healthy, responsive lives. This test can be performed as early as 7 weeks old.

*OFA Submission fees are in addition to the costs listed above.

We do host OFA health testing clinics where we may able to bring in specialists that can allow evaluation of Eyes and more advanced Cardiac certification. Please contact us for more information on when our next clinic will be or check the OFA website for nearby clinics

Parasite Prevention

Parasite control and prevention are crucial aspects of responsible dog care. Dogs are susceptible to various external and internal parasites, such as fleas, ticks, worms, and mites, which can lead to significant health issues. Fleas, for example, are not only a nuisance but can also cause allergic reactions, anemia, and the transmission of tapeworms. Internal parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and heartworms can result in digestive issues, weight loss, and even organ damage if left untreated. Furthermore, parasites can easily spread to other pets and humans, creating broader health concerns.

Effective parasite prevention helps ensure the long-term well-being of dogs by reducing the risk of infections, promoting a healthier environment, and preventing costly veterinary treatments. Regular use of preventive medications, such as flea and tick treatments and deworming protocols, can significantly minimize the chances of infestations. Overall, investing time and effort into parasite control not only enhances a dog’s comfort but also contributes to their overall health, longevity, and quality of life.

To help you treat or prevent parasites we offer the following:

Heartworm testing

Annual heartworm testing is essential for detecting infections early and ensuring the effectiveness of preventive medications. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause severe damage to a dog’s heart, lungs, and blood vessels if left untreated. Even dogs on regular prevention should be tested yearly, as no method is 100% effective. Early detection allows for timely treatment, preventing life-threatening complications and ensuring a dog’s long-term health and well-being.

Heartworm Prevention

  • Interceptor Plus
    • Interceptor Plus is a broad-spectrum parasite preventive that protects dogs against heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. In addition to preventing heartworm disease, ProHeart 12 also helps control hookworm infections. By ensuring consistent, year-round protection, it reduces the risk of heartworm-related complications and supports long-term canine health.

Flea and Tick Prevention

  • Nexgard
